An Absolute Beginners Guide to iPhone development

i found this link today while combing through some tweets in my favorite little twitter application twhirl.

the guys @ Switch on the Code have put together a VERY simple and easy to understand guide to making your first little "hello world" application for the iPhone. all you need is the following:

  1. a mac computer and the iPhone SDK
  2. Xcode
  3. Interface Builder
  4. iPhone Simulator that you can use for free.

if you want to actually put your new App on an actual iPhone or into the AppStore, you have to pay the $99 fee.

i really want to build an iPhone application, and i plan to, trust me! But until then, im just going to collect more links, store them here, and hopefully build a nice little pool of guides that will help me!

now, if someone would just buy a new MacBook Pro 15" with 4gb of ram, i'd be able to get started!

John Farrar's Gravatar I have been looking at the Mac Mini. :) Building apps for the iPhone is the first reason I have taken a serious look at getting a Mac. Wish they had a Vista (or even a Windows 7) builder kit!!!

Tom Miller's Gravatar I have been wanting to develop a iphone app too myself. You can install OSX on nearly any PC now using osx86 project, I did it for fun a few weekends ago. It was a lot of fun. The only hard part is getting some of the drivers to work, like video, wifi, etc. I bought a mac pro and a mac powerbook based on my love of the iphone, it is making so many people switch. Thanks for the link, I actually have been trying to find a really easy tutorial to get started.

diamondtearz's Gravatar I wrote an article about iPhone Development on the PC a little while back. I'm posting the link below. I hope your link manager does not block it. http://diamondtearz.org/blog/2009/02/25/build-ipho...

Larry C. Lyons's Gravatar As a mac user for years, iPhone development I could really really get into. however locking the iPhone to AT&T has certainly dampened my enthusiasm. However given that there's an SDK and simulator, I may change my mind.

@Peter the most recent MacUser reviewed the current Mac desktop line. The lower end Mac Miini got a better review than the next one up.

here's how they conclude:

Between the two models, it’s tough to justify the additional cost of the $799 mini. Those willing and able to perform their own upgrades should do so. Otherwise you should consider purchasing the $599 model with Apple’s 2GB RAM upgrade and then attaching an external drive; you’ll get more storage for your money, and if you go the FireWire route, you can actually get better performance than that of even the the $799 mini

That said, a friend of mine has a maxed out Mini and runs CF with MySQL on it, and used CFEclipse. I've played with it a bit and its pretty fast for that sort of work. Myself, I'll be picking up a mini in the near future and turning it into a media center for the rec room.
